PURFC Men Take 3rd at Ivies |
| Sunday, April 26, 2009 |
This past weekend, the Princeton men's rugby team took third place at the Ivy League Tournament held at Yale and Columbia.
In the first round, Princeton defeated the University of Pennsylvania 25-20 in a thrilling overtime match. Tied 15-15 after regulation play, the match went to two five-minute overtime periods. Tied at 20-20 after two tries scored in the ten minutes of extended play, both teams elected to continue playing until either team scored. Senior Captain Benton Erwin scored the winning try with a quick grub kick through Penn's defensive line.
In the second round less than a few hours later, Princeton fell to Ivy league powerhouse Dartmouth. After a fairly slow beginning, Dartmouth ran the score up to 104-0 against Princeton, who were clearly showing the effects of the previous double-overtime game vs. Penn.
On Sunday, Princeton took third place by defeating Yale 32-14 at Columbia's Baker Field. A strong finish to a very strong season by any standards. |
