Princeton, showing continuing improvement, ends EPRU season with a 24-12 win over Temple
Saturday, October 18, 2008
A determined Temple squad, knowing they had to beat Princeton to advance to the EPRU playoffs, came to play on a sunny day at West Windsor. We knew this game could prove one of our hardest tests of the season since the Temple roster boasts over 90 students including the highly talented US U20 center Gareth Jones.

Princeton beats a highly fancied Bloomsburg team 27-8 to gain revenge for earlier season narrow loss
Saturday, October 04, 2008
Princeton was ready for Bloomsburg when they arrived full of confidence at West Windsor. Only a few weeks ago, the Tigers had suffered a frustrating15-23 loss to a very physical Bloomsburg with the Husky forwards bludgeoning their way to the win. We knew it was important to hunt them down at every point of contact to prevent them establishing any meaningful continuity game and so developed a game plan to attack Bloomsburg in the areas they considered their strengths.

An improving Princeton team falls just short to Villanova 13-15
Saturday, September 27, 2008
Malvern, PA.
Our own inability to kick and the referee were the two key factors in our failure to win a game we easily could have won.
Unfortunately very early into the game we discovered we had a new referee who was very challenged to understand Law 15 which states, “Players must be able to take their full weight on their two feet when they compete for the ball at the breakdown”. Villanova adapted much better to the referee’s interpretation of the law, where he allowed players to leave their feet and come flying into contact to seal off the ball. In fact, throughout the game, many rucks resembled the decks of fishing trawlers with Villanova players flopping around like landed flounder.

Princeton falls short 15-23 against a physical Bloomsburg team
Saturday, September 20, 2008
Princeton traveled to Bloomsburg on September 20, a warm sunny day, only to fall short in our first EPRU league game 15-23 to a solid Bloomsburg side. Princeton’s inability to convert 12 points worth of goal kicks (conversions and penalties) cost a game we could and should have won, scoring three tries to Bloomsburg’s two.

Princeton wins back the Koranda Cup
Saturday, April 19, 2008
Princeton beat Yale 43-27 at West Windsor to win back the Rob Koranda Cup.
The Princeton vs. Yale rugby rivalry has strong historic roots. In 2002 after many years of not playing Yale regularly, Princeton decided to re-establish the tradition and challenge Yale to an annual match. The following year, Yale graciously accepted our request to make the match special for both teams by creating a trophy in memory of Rob Koranda, one of Princeton’s greatest rugby players. Rob died in the Chicago porch collapse in June 2003, a tragedy that claimed 12 other young lives. He was a very talented flanker on the field and a close friend.

Rutgers wins Rickerson Cup in New Jersey’s A-side Collegiate Final
Saturday, April 05, 2008
Princeton won all its A-side Pool games beating Seton Hall 14-0, Rutgers 12-10, Montclair 31-7, and then playing the best rugby of the whole day, TCNJ 47-0. The two teams with the best records advanced to the Final, leaving Rutgers to face Princeton for the second time that day.
Despite our beating Rutgers in the pool stages, with 3 A-side starters taken to the hospital during the day and one A-side starter already out for the season, our fifth game of the day proved “a bridge too far” for a Princeton team that clawed for every inch throughout the tournament. In addition, Princeton was forced to play one more game than Rutgers because Montclair State forfeited its last game of the day to Rutgers.

Learning lessons from the Ireland Tour, Princeton overwhelms the current EPRU Champions
Saturday, March 29, 2008
Princeton played good rugby to overwhelm Millersville, the current EPRU champions, by a score of 41-0. In a display of running rugby and good defense, Princeton showed strong discipline in maintaining focus through a very poorly officiated match. The match was frequently interrupted by penalties, off the ball incidents, and long, frequent lectures by the referee.

Dash to Dublin ends in success ---- Princeton returns from a successful Spring Break Tour to Ireland
Monday, March 24, 2008
Following the very successful nine day long, 24 hours a day “Dash to Dublin” winter fundraiser, the club raised the money to take 36 students and one rugby coach for a 7 day rugby tour of Ireland. Enduring freezing winds and two major snow storms, the team cycled 3,230 miles (the distance from Princeton to Dublin) on a stationary bike set-up outside the main entrance of the Frist Student Center. Engineering Professor Josh Girvin remarked “I was really amazed, every night on my way back from class there was someone on the bike, rain or snow, this was a great example of the team’s character and self-belief”.
The Spring Tour was seven days’ long and the team spent two nights each in Galway, Dublin and Limerick. For many players it was their first visit to Ireland and everyone returned talking about the wonderful friendliness and hospitality of the Irish people.

Spring season kicks-off with close loss to Georgetown University
Saturday, March 01, 2008
Princeton kicked off its 2008 spring season with a narrow 10-7 defeat against Georgetown in Baltimore. Given the significant number of regular A-side players unavailable this weekend, we had to start 4 players on the A side who had never played a game of rugby before.
Georgetown is a quality team, with good athletes and deep experience. They are in the 2008 MARFU National Championship Playoffs, and proved to be an excellent opponent for our first game of 2008. The Hoyas also enjoy a strong recruiting base from the numerous Catholic rugby-playing high schools in the Washington DC area, including the perennially strong Gonzaga.

Improved Second Half performance sparks away win over West Chester
Saturday, October 06, 2007
In our 3rd EPRU League game, Princeton beat West Chester 22-7 away. West Chester was winning 7-3 at the half. The second half proved a very different game with the Princeton Scrum really attacking West Chester at every set-piece. When the game ended soon the Princeton team walked off knowing that we needed to have scored more points to help us in the EPRU title hunt.

Close loss to U Penn in our second EPRU League game
Saturday, September 29, 2007
A very strong U Penn team came to West Windsor on Saturday and left having gained a hard fought 16-15 result. As we expected, U Penn was a bigger team than we were with a huge powerful scrum together with some talented backs. It was really a great game of rugby and many fans said how much they had enjoyed the contest.

Princeton snatches an overtime draw from the jaws of victory in our first EPRU League game
Saturday, September 22, 2007
On a hot and humid day at West Windsor, Princeton ended up drawing against Millersville in a game that we could have won if we had kept better composure. In the last minute of a very significantly extended second half, our concentration was getting sloppy and a Princeton lock was caught offside. The referee awarded Millersville a penalty right under our posts. The Millersville kicker had no trouble scoring the three points to tie the game. Immediately after the kick the referee blew for full time, leaving both teams frustrated. Kithinji Muriira was awarded our Man of the Match award.

Princeton shows promise in friendly in “Friendly” against West Chester
Saturday, September 15, 2007
On a clear and sunny day at West Windsor Princeton got by West Chester 33-10 in a match of good running rugby from both teams. Almost all parts of our game came together and we were able to record a good result against a West Chester team that has a lot of potential. We all know that when we meet West Chester again in October for our third EPRU League game it will prove a much harder contest.

Princeton season kicks off at Liberty Cup tournament
Saturday, September 08, 2007
Our season kicked-off September 8th on a very hot and humid day at the 5th Annual Media RFC Collegiate Liberty Cup Tournament in Philadelphia. With only one day of practice we took 16 players who had returned early to campus to play in two pre-season warm-up games. We won our first game against the Wharton Business School 10-0. Our second game was against U Penn who had earlier beaten Wharton 26-0. U Penn proved a much stronger side with some fine new freshman recruits, a great new Fly Half, and a very large, mobile and experienced Pack. Clearly fitter and stronger than we were, they dominated Princeton in all facets of play and won convincingly 23-7. Penn went on to beat West Chester 7-0 and then lost narrowly 14-5 to Albright in the Final. U Penn is looking very strong for this season and has every reason to expect to recapture the EPRU title that they last won in 2004. Next, Princeton will play West Chester at home on September 15th. West Chester has been back at school since August and, following a great recruitment drive, now has 62 players as registered members of the club.
